November 2005

END OF AN ERA

In the last week or two the club has lost two very good supporters.

Bill Emeny has sold out of WHITEHORSE TRUCKS and ROWPRINT has closed its doors. Both of these businesses have given more then they needed too to help where they could. The club, the class and the sport will miss your support.

All the best for the future

2005 ASSA (vic) Committee
and committee members of bygone years.

AGM 2005

The month of November is AGM time. This is your chance as a member to elect in the committee for 2006.

If you wish to have a run on the 2006 committee all you need to do is get someone to nominate you! You must be a financial member to nominate, and financial to be on the committee. It's that easy. The committee meets once a month and has the responsibly for the running of the club. You will make decisions on all types of subjects, such as the Running of our race meeting, Club nights, Social events and so on.

The AGM will be held at BELLS HOTEL in Sth MELBOURNE on Wednesday 16 th NOVEMBER. A 7.45pm start will get the club meeting side of this over with before we head in for the AGM.

Good luck to all

Grant RollasonOCTOBER CLUB MEETING - GUEST SPEAKER

This month we have a very special guest speaker, his name is Grant Rollason, hardly a house hold name but a very clever man indeed. Grant is a world champion , as a mechanic, and constructor of the last two years championship hydroplanes. His skills don't stop there! Back in the land of the long white cloud he sharpened his skills on NZ Sports Sedans and TransAm cars. Be sure not to miss this night as we learn about Hydroplane GP racing and more! - SEE YOU AT BELLS

ASSA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
AN EXTRA ROUND

Behind the scenes myself with the support of the committee and NASSA have been working on adding an extra round to the CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP. Following plenty of chat at club meetings over the last few years about ‘racing at our round of the championship’ or ‘we need an extra round because we only race at five (state championship) its been decided to add an extra round of the CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP to this years racing. It is to take place at PHILLIP ISLAND on the weekend of May 21/22 2005. This round is to be held in conjunction with the opening round of the National SPORTS SEDAN Series.

It is no secret that the National Series is not traveling that well for one reason or another. Blame can not be placed on any one problem, but its fair to say that a lot of damage was done a few years back by a few.

At recent and past Presidents meetings, all that attended agreed that where it’s possible the states should help to get numbers to a National Round. So, just how do we go about doing this? Past committees in all states have tried different ways to entice car owners to enter the national Series, when the circus is in town, some kind of work, others plain haven’t.

I come from a rallying background, many years back when I was fast, young and driving, the ARC was in the same trouble as we are now. Small fields, no interest, and spiraling costs. The factory cars left and the whole sport was begging to survive. State rallying was going along well, but was running out of places to race due to the lack of interest. Like Sports Sedans many things were tried to change the turning tide, but alas nothing really worked. Then out of the blue, and maybe in an act of shear desperation, an idea that worked, and is still working to this day some 15 years later. Let’s combine the two races! When the ARC is in town lets make it a round of the state championship as well. Those who want ARC points pay this much, those who want state points pay this much. One event, twice the cars and everyone gets a chance at some points, and who knows, a fast state bloke might just do well, outright!

So this is what we have proposed, to help the National series, lets combine (add an extra round) our club championship with theirs. We can’t have any more State Championship rounds as these are already set for the year with CAMS and the VMCRC bodies.
We as the Committee can add rounds to our CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP though. Its been a long slog but I believe this is something that can happen, not just short term but well in to the future. Many hurdles had to be jumped before an idea like this could gather momentum. Things like cost of entries, licenses, 110% cut off for qualifying, and as well as other problems. I have worked with Richard Mclean (amrs) Phil Compton (nassa) Dean Randle (vic rep) to try and get their support and help in getting over all the hurdles in front of this idea. All have greeted the idea with open arms and have helped where they can.

So what doe’s this mean to you the competitor?

Well we have an extra round of the CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP, cost for state based runners has been kept at the same price that we now pay to go racing (around the $300 mark) I could not see why we should pay more the that just to help out. Anyone with a CAMS license can enter. The cut off for qualifying has been moved out to 120%. This was done to insure that the smaller class cars did not miss the start, how could we have a Club Championship with out them. All of this means that ANY 3D LOG BOOKED car or one with a history of doing state racing as a Sports Sedan can enter. To be eligible for Club points you must be a member of ASSA(vic). CLUB and CLASS points will be awarded to ASSA(vic) members as normal.

I really hope that you the members and the car owners support this idea and that we see you at Phillip Island on the weekend of May 21/22. There are three races, all with rolling starts, 20 minutes of TV on Speedweek (SBS) and to be promoted with local and national advertising. Other classes racing on the weekend are F3 (gold star), F Holden, GTP, Commodore cup, GT sports cars (nations cup) Touring car challenge just to name a few.

2005 race dates are now;

  • MALLALA Feb 12/13 State & Club points
  • SANDOWN April 16/17 State & Club points
  • P/ISLAND May 21/22 Club points NASSA

FIRST BLOOD TO LUKE

Luke Chambers came out all guns blazing at the first round of the State Championship, held at Mallala. The “Executive heating & cooling” (20B RX7) team stamped there intentions for this years Championship by taking the first “pole” of the year. Daniel Tamasi in his Calibra was a further 6 tenths back with Rod Smith a further tenth back in third.
Not all went to plan as the weekend went on for Luke’s team, they went on to win to first event but lost an engine in the second of four races for the weekend. Rod Smith (chev Falcon) won the remaining three races with Milton Seferis taking a third and three seconds to open his account for 2005.

The next round is at SANDOWN on the weekend of April 16/17 where it will be “on for young and old” as those who did not travel to Mallala will be playing catch up with points and the teams with points plan to push away from the pack.
Roll on Sandown.
